Did you know that the distant ancestors of Pomeranian Spitz are Lapland and Iceland sled dogs? It is difficult to believe that these crumbs have something in common with Siberian huskies, which also belong to sledding breeds! What else is known about Spitz? We have prepared a selection of curious facts.
The first Spitzs were huge
It is not surprising that at the very beginning of the formation, the Spitz breeds were completely different. Surprising is the fact that these dogs weighed 14-16 kg, and lived mainly with peasants. Initially, pets guarded the cattle. They moved to the royal families much later: they began to recognize this breed around 1900. In part, Queen Victoria of England, who had 6 such dogs, contributed to this.
At the sight of a Wolfspitz, the connection between Pomeranian and working dog breeds seems more real.
Spitz vs. Science
Dwarf Spitz was a favorite of Isaac Newton. This is the same scientist who discovered the law of gravity. It is known that once a dog accidentally turned over burning candles and burned part of the owner's work. Isaac Newton did not scold him: he loved his companion too much.

Pomeranian is not the only Spitz
There are several varieties of Spitz. The largest is Wolfspitz. Its height reaches 55 cm. It is 3-4 times higher than a Pomeranian! Grosspitz is slightly smaller: his height is approximately 45-50 cm. There are also medium, small and miniature spitzs.
Some of the breed's fans are Kristen Steward from Twilight, tennis player Maria Sharapova, Julia Nachalova and Sharon Osbourne, Nicole Richie and Eva Longoria
Pomeranian Spitz saved from the sinking Titanic
For this you need to thank their loving owners. Onboard there were more than 20 dogs. Many of them remained in the cells at the time of the tragedy. One of the passengers, remembering the animals, left the lifeboat to release the pets and give them a chance, but never returned. Judging by what the survivors saw in the water of floating dogs, this passenger nevertheless got to the cages. However, only those pets survived that the owners secretly carried to lifeboats: thanks to the size, two Spitz and one Pekingese managed to get out of the sinking ship in towels and blankets. The rest were not allowed on board. The owners had to leave favorites on the Titanic.
Pomeranian very similar to German Spitz
So much so that sometimes inexperienced breeders can not distinguish some from others. Sometimes even the owners themselves do not know who lives at their place. The German Spitz has an elongated muzzle, and the coat is harder. Crosses between the two breeds are allowed, but then the puppies are considered Germans. If you want to buy a purebred orange, be sure to contact a nursery with a good reputation and read the pedigree of the kids.

Teddy Bear Haircuts are Potentially Dangerous
Many owners shave their pets baldly, leaving only their furry head. In fact, such measures greatly harm the companion's coat. Part of the hair remains under the skin. If normally she leaves the body under mechanical stress (combing, rubbing against the carpet, etc.), then after shearing, the stump can come out only with another young hair. The outer coat becomes more difficult to break through, which leads to its disappearance. The more companion has soft downy hairs, the more they become tangled and dirty. In severe cases, the wool is partially unable to germinate, which causes the formation of ulcers on the skin or baldness.
In trimmed oranges, the hair becomes lighter
Spitzs are not just miniature funny crumbs, but dogs with their own history, advantages and disadvantages. If you want to get such a companion, you should prepare in advance and come to terms with some features of the breed.
