Maltese, they are also called Maltese lapdogs - one of the most beautiful decorative dogs. Their story is rich in unusual and fascinating events, but these pets have always been next to a person. Representatives of this breed constantly bathed in human attention and love, they were admired and admitted to all spheres of their life. How many breeds can boast the same success?
History of breed origin
According to historical sources, Maltese lapdogs belong to the oldest dog breeds. Archaeologists have found objects of art with the image of these animals and small sculptures with their form, dated to the VIII century BC.
Although there is an opinion that the origin of the breed was lost somewhere in the depths of centuries, but in fact there are documented references to Melite dogs - then Melita was the name of the Greek island, which today is called Malta. There is evidence that in those days the city of the same name on the island had a developed infrastructure, cultural values and brisk trade.
However, maltese is also mentioned in the more ancient Egyptian culture. Since many sculptures resembling these dogs were found, as well as letters with their images, the idea of the Egyptian origin of the breed is well founded. In those days, the puppies of these snow-white little dogs were very valuable gifts presented to the nobility and rulers, along with jewelry and expensive fabrics. No wonder they were considered a sign of a comfortable life in luxury and prosperity.
Queen Maltese was with the Queen of Great Britain Victoria, and Captain Lucius brought her a couple more representatives of this breed. But, unfortunately, during a long journey, they lost their attractive appearance and were not presented to Her Majesty. The captain gave them to his mastiff breeding brother, and this pair of Maltese lapdogs became the founders of the breed in this country.
The First World War adversely affected the breed, and Maltese almost disappeared. However, later several individuals of lapwings were brought from the continent, and they were closely bred. In the 30s the first pedigree club appeared, and the dogs from this club were taken as the basis for many kennels.
Despite the fact that the Second World War stopped the cynological processes, the tribal individuals Maltese still managed to save. In 1965, an exhibition of Maltese lapdogs was held, where there were over six dozen participants.
And in America, the first registration of Maltese lapdogs occurred in 1888. Over time, the number of registered dogs increased and in 1927 reached almost three dozen. Moreover, this turned out to be timely, because in England they almost disappeared. Well-organized clubs of this breed exist in the modern States, and Maltese mono-shows are held annually.

- The nose is small, with a large black lobe, the nostrils are well open. The jaws are developed, but devoid of rudeness. Both of them are on the same level and do not protrude; they have thin lips with a black border. Maltese bite according to the “scissors” type.

The Maltese lapdogs are distinguished by their devotion, and without looking at their compact size, they always make attempts to defend family members, especially if it seems to them that the owners are in danger. And it doesn’t matter if the threat comes from a person or another animal. In this case, the Maltese give voice and even try to use their teeth in order to punish the offender. By their behavior, they confirm that tiny dogs can be fearless and bold defenders.
Hearing suspicious sounds, the Maltese will immediately make a noise, which, thanks to the sonorous barking, makes them just amazing. Maltese has a lively mind and remarkable ingenuity, which allows them to master even complex tricks and commands. However, some representatives may be stubborn and somewhat spoiled.
Lapwings are not very suitable for communicating with young children, as the latter can injure pets. But with older children, Maltese communicate perfectly. Thanks to its friendliness, the Maltese lapdogs get along well with any pets - cats, rodents and birds.
Dogs are so attached to the owner that they can worry and suffer during separation. Maltese is recommended to start people of retirement age, with disabilities, as well as those living in a small living space.
Care, health and maintenance features
A beautiful and well-groomed lapdog is the result, first of all, of its owners. And for many owners of these beautiful dogs, caring for them is a pleasure. They are stocked with a whole arsenal of tools and instruments, which facilitates the cosmetic care of the fine maltese hair. In this situation, it is very important to prevent the wool from falling off. The complex of procedures includes the following:
- combing the hair, which must be done every day;
- washing a pet ;
- if you want to simplify the care of your pet, you can regularly trim it, but only if it is not a participant in exhibitions; in show-class dogs, the coat should form a beautiful mantle.
Wash Maltese lapdogs using professional products designed for long-haired breeds. This includes shampoos, balms and conditioners. You can also use special anti-warlock products and protect the wool from stalling.

It is important to dry your pet properly. To do this, you need to wipe it with a terry towel, after which the wet wool is dried with a hairdryer. Care should be taken to keep the dog away from the draft, and the temperature of the hair dryer should not be high. Otherwise, you can not only ruin the coat, but also burn the skin of the pet.
The eyes of the Maltese lapdogs need regular care, as they are prone to profuse lacrimation . In this regard, dirty tracks form on their snow-white hair under the eyes and deprive the appearance of a dog of neatness. To avoid such a nuisance, it is recommended to regularly clean your pet’s eyes with a cloth moistened with clean water or a special eye cleanser.
Otherwise, these dogs are quite unpretentious. They can live both in a spacious house and in a small apartment. In addition, they can do perfectly without daily walks, if they are trained to handle the need for a tray. But, of course, Maltese needs fresh air and regular physical activity, so you still have to take the four-legged friend out, although not as often as other dogs.
