Ear scabies caused by the sarcoptoid tick Otodektos cynotis is an extremely contagious parasitic disease that every cat owner has encountered. Similar problems with ears occur in cats quite often, they can not only cause concern to the pet, but also lead to serious consequences for its health. Ear drops are considered the most effective for the treatment of otodectosis.
Ear mite: what is it and how to recognize it
It is impossible to make out an ear tick with the naked eye, since the size of its pale yellowish body does not exceed 0.4 mm (in the female) and 0.3 mm (in the male). Ectoparasites live along the entire length of the ear canal and on the tympanic membrane of the animal, piercing the epidermis, eating lymph, tissue fluid and pieces of the epithelium.
An ear mite is clearly visible under a microscope even with a slight increase
It’s easy to understand that a pet is the victim of an Otodektos cynotis attack:
- the cat behaves uneasily, constantly shakes its head and rubs it strongly against various objects of decor;
- the animal with its hind paw convulsively combes its ears, while trying to get inside (into the ear canal);
- it smells bad from the ears of the pet;
- brown plaque appears inside the folds of the auricle, dried dark crusts and scabs;
- hearing is impaired.
With otodectosis, there is always a dark coating in the ear
When we picked up the kitten on the street, his ears were just in a terrible state. Dried deposits had to be soaked first, and only then removed. The poor animal was in severe pain and could not tolerate treatment. I had to tightly wrap it in a towel in order to keep my hands safe and sound, as the cat fiercely resisted and scratched heavily. The tick had to be fought for a rather long time, only after 2-3 months there was a noticeable improvement.

How do ear mite drops work?
Most often, ear scabies in cats are treated with drops, which are instilled directly into the ears of the pet or applied between the shoulder blades (on the withers) . The active substances in these drugs may be different, but they are all aimed at the destruction of parasites. Most commonly used:
The action of active substances is based on blocking the conductivity of nerve impulses that cause impaired motor reflexes, and subsequently complete paralysis and death of ectoparasite.

How to use drops for cats from an ear tick
Before using any ear drops, it is necessary to carefully and very thoroughly clean all the folds inside the ear from plaque, dried up crusts and scabs. Do this with a cotton swab or stick soaked in a medicinal solution or chlorhexidine.
Ears must be thoroughly cleaned first.
To facilitate the process, you can soak dry scabs by dropping a drug into the ear. After 10-15 minutes, they give the cat the opportunity to shake his head to shake out soaked pieces and the drug.
After cleaning, the required amount of the drug is instilled into each ear canal according to the instructions, which should first be carefully studied. Be sure to treat both ears, even if mites are found in only one. For a more complete hit of the drug on the inner surfaces and folds of the auricle, it is recommended to fold it in half lengthwise and massage a little (rub) at the base. Since most drops are effective only against adult sexually mature individuals and do not affect larvae, their repeated application will necessarily be required to destroy the newly hatched ticks.
Ear drops are usually instilled twice with a break of 5-7 days
When using therapeutic drops on the withers, you need to spread the hair and apply the product on clean, dry, undamaged skin in places that the cat cannot reach (at the base of the neck, between the shoulder blades).

Antacaricidal drugs are best applied in protective rubber gloves. At the end of the treatment, hands are washed thoroughly with soap. If the drug accidentally enters the mucous membranes and skin, it is immediately washed off under running water. Empty bottles for medicine for household purposes cannot be used, they are disposed of in containers for household waste.
It is better not to let small children admit to a sick animal within two days after treatment.
Handle the ears of the cat with gloves
Contraindications and side effects
Possible side effects and contraindications to the use of the drug are indicated in the instructions attached to it. In case of an allergic reaction, individual intolerance or overdose, you should immediately contact the clinic.
Where could I buy
Ear drops for the treatment of otodectosis can be purchased at a veterinary pharmacy or pet store, a prescription is not required for this. But they can only be used after consultation with a veterinarian.
The cat very often scratched its ears. Looking, I saw that from the inside the auricle is completely covered with a sort of black coating that cannot be cleaned. But the ears of the cats inside do not get dirty normally, and the cat will simply not tear them apart with a paw in the process of scratching. In the pharmacy for animals they suggested that this is one of the varieties of the ear tick and recommended drops - AVZ Bars. First, I dripped a few drops onto the auricle from the inside (not into the ear canal). We massaged the eye, thanks to the oily structure, the product is very well distributed over the entire surface. The black coating softens and can be easily removed with a cotton swab, but the first time it is not completely removed, because there are also hairs inside. And only after that we drip directly into the ear canal. There is no burning sensation, irritation (I also dripped into my ear, Fanya will not tell), it just feels like water has got into my ears, so the cat will shake its head and try to scratch it. For a cat to be completely cured, two instillations into the ear canal and a few days were enough to completely clean the ears of the black parasite colonies.Epiphanius77
drops of anandine, only drip into pre-cleaned ears .... you can’t clean with a dry cotton swab - it will hurt the cat dry peels ... it’s better to moisten it slightly. oil for example .. sore drops are also welcome. but it’s better to show the cat to the doctor .. suddenly there are already not just ticks, but otitis media ...Guest Source: http://www.woman.ru/home/animal/thread/4269360/ © Woman.ru
repeatedly advised to drip in the ears of Front Line spot he. A single instillation of 2 drops in each ear is enough. In rare cases, when the tick is many, repeat again.alissiya
we had a big cat, I sat on top of it (fixed). Then the leopard dripped on a cotton swab and cleaned my ears well, I didn’t scream. Then I dripped drops, then I started to meow and break out, but still need to fold the ears in half and massage .Oral of course .... then hid under the bed. And then all the dirt leaks out of the ears, it looks terrible .... but it's worth it to be patient.Irina
He was treated by Stronghold, it is done twice, as they wrote here for sure. During breaks, Amit or Amit FORTE treated the surface of the ears with the preparation - I used FORTE in several animals - BECAUSE SOMEONE HAD TO HERE TO TREAT. BUT THESE DROPS ARE REALLY BURNING, NOT ALL OF THEY WILL BE patient. There are naturally patient cats, they will be.apocalypto
When I settled in the city, the wild cat treated 2 drops of Front Line Combo in each ear, these are fleas from expensive packaging, but the veterinarian prescribed 1-2 drops in each ear in the ears. After 2 weeks, they said to repeat when new ticks hatch from the testicles. I repeated.Alexandra27251
A tick is defined as follows: you take a sheet of white office paper, put it under a bright light (a window, a table lamp - it doesn’t matter), use a cotton swab to scoop out the contents of the ear and make a smear on the sheet. Then attentively peer, and even a magnifying glass is not necessary. If the tick is moving, it will be visible that there is something alive, although you do not see the ticks themselves, the tick is very small, much less than a millimeter, but you will see for sure the swarming of these ticks.softcat
It is impossible to start otodectosis, since in severely advanced cases this is even fraught with the death of a pet. Modern veterinary drugs allow you to quickly cope with ectoparasite, without harming the cat's body with exact observance of dosages.
