To visit the desert, it is not necessary to go to Africa or Australia. Deserts and semi-deserts are also located in Russia. Deserts occupy the lowest part of the Caspian lowland, where flat surfaces alternate with sandy sediments. The climate here is sharply continental: very hot and dry summers, cold and not very snowy winters. In addition to the Volga and Akhtuba, there are no other sources of water here. There are several oases in the deltas of these rivers.
The semi-desert strip of Russia is located in the southeast of the European part of the country, starting in the left bank of the Volga and reaching the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains. This is the western part of the Caspian region and the elevation of Ergeni. There is also a sharply continental and dry climate. The water arteries of the semi-desert zone are the Volga and Sarpinsky lakes.
On the territory of deserts and semi-deserts, a small amount of precipitation falls - up to 350 millimeters per year. Soils here are mainly sandy and desert-steppe.
The word "desert" suggests that there is no life here. But it is not so.
Climate of deserts and semi-deserts of Russia
The climatic conditions of deserts and semi-deserts influenced the formation of a special flora and fauna. The vegetation in this zone is mosaic. Perennial grasses - ephemeroids - have predominantly spread in semi-deserts. Ephemers are also growing here, whose life cycle is two to three months. In general, plants are small, but have a powerful root system. In the semi-desert region, black wormwood and hodgepodge, bluegrass and biloba conifer, camel thorn and fescue grow. Closer to the Caspian Sea, the semi-desert passes into the desert, where vegetation is found less and less. Sometimes here you can notice Elmius, wormwood or scorpion.
In contrast to the poor flora, in the deserts and semi-deserts a lot of animals live: rodents, predators, large animals. There are gophers and jerboas, hamsters and field mice, steppe marmots and corsacs, vipers and snakes, saigas and an eared hedgehog , as well as many birds, such as the pink pelican .
Ecological problems of deserts and semi-deserts of Russia
If we talk about the environmental problems of deserts and semi-deserts of Russia, then human intervention in the nature of this area is a danger. The desertification process itself - an extreme degree of soil erosion - leads to significant changes, especially under the influence of anthropogenic factors. Another problem of deserts and semi-deserts of Russia is poaching and the extermination of animals, plants in large numbers. And since some rare species live here, human activities cause serious damage to nature. Therefore, it is necessary to protect and preserve the landscapes of deserts and semi-deserts of the country, since this is the wealth of our planet.
