Rostov Region is one of the most industrially developed regions of Russia, where the country's largest industrial enterprises are located: metallurgical, engineering, energy. Economic success, as elsewhere in the world, entails a number of environmental problems. This is the excessive use of natural resources, and pollution of the biosphere , and the problem of waste.
Air pollution problems
A major environmental problem is air pollution. Sources of pollution are vehicles and energy facilities. During the burning of fuel sources, harmful substances are released into the atmosphere. Despite the fact that enterprises use treatment facilities, pollutants still get into the environment.
No less dangerous are waste and debris, sources of air, water and soil pollution. The region has a large number of landfills, but their content does not meet sanitary standards. Quite often, the ignition of waste occurs due to its congestion, and chemicals are released into the atmosphere. Unfortunately, only 3 garbage sorting enterprises operate in the region. In the future, raw materials can be used again.
Water pollution problem
Rostov region has access to the Sea of Azov. Industrial and domestic wastewater polluting the water area is constantly discharged into it. Among the most important problems of the sea, the following should be highlighted:
- eutrophication of water;
- oil pollution;
- drainage of agricultural chemistry and pesticides;
- discharge of waste into the sea;
- discharge of warm water from power plants;
- overfishing, etc.
In addition to the sea, the region’s hydraulic system includes rivers and reservoirs. They also dump waste, industrial effluents, and minerals used in agriculture. This changes river modes. Also in the water area are affected by dams and hydroelectric power plants. The region’s water resources are polluted by nitrogen and sulfates, phenol and copper, magnesium and carbon.
In the Rostov region there are many environmental problems, and the most relevant ones are considered. To improve the ecology of the region, changes in the economy are needed, a decrease in the number of vehicles, the use of environmentally friendly technologies, and environmental protection actions are also needed.
