People who keep both a cat and a dog at home note a significant difference between these pets. For example, the first about a third of the whole day is spent on washing, while the latter are almost impossible to catch for this occupation. Many people wonder why cats wash themselves, but not dogs. In this regard, zoologists have a scientific justification.
Why are cats washing and not dogs?
The desire of representatives of the cat family to constantly lick their coat is associated not only with natural cleanliness. The fact is that cats are predators with a well-developed hunting instinct. In order not to frighten away his prey, the animal seeks to wash off the traces of its own smell and thereby allow itself to get closer to the object of its hunt. In addition, homemade pussies are very fond of massage, and with a rough tongue they massage their body, improving blood circulation and relaxing.
The tongue of the cat is covered with small bristles that help get rid of dirt on the hair and hair loss
Dogs, unlike cats, are pack animals, therefore, on the contrary, it is important for them to preserve their natural smell, so that their relatives accept it as their own. If the dog wants to disguise himself, for this purpose he can lie in the grass. Another reason why dogs don’t wash is explained by the fact that the spine of these animals is not as flexible as that of cats, so the dog simply cannot physically bend to lick its back and sides.
It is interesting that dogs living in the same house with cats quite often learn from their neighbors the habit of rubbing their faces with their paws, imitating the washing process.
Other behavioral differences
In addition to the habit of washing, dogs and cats also differ in other habits:
- The wagging tail of a dog means joy and pleasant excitement, caused, as a rule, by the arrival of the owner home. In cats, the tail dangling from side to side indicates a state of stress and aggression.
- Owners of cats and dogs cannot fail to notice that the former always tend to lie on a bed or ottoman, preferably closer to the owner, while the latter are laid on the rug at the entrance to the apartment. By nature, the instinct is laid in them to protect the home, while the cat wants to be closer to its owner and be in contact with the person.
- Dog breeders know that when communicating with a pet, you should not look closely at the dog’s eyes and smile: the animal will regard this as aggression and a demonstration of its superiority. Cats calmly perceive eye contact and even need it. You may notice that a loving cat is closely watching the owner.
Cats and dogs are very different animals, so their behavior is very different
The difference in the behavior of cats and dogs is not only that some love to wash, while others never do this. The differences between these pets are huge, but they have their own merits, so they deserve the love of the owners.
