According to the International Cynological Association, today there are over four hundred dog breeds. However, very little is known about some of them and it’s not only difficult to meet their representatives, but even to find information is not always possible. Naturally, rare breeds of dogs attract the attention of people who want to have unusual animals in their pets. But it is worth remembering that future owners may encounter a number of difficulties - from the high cost of puppies to the lack of international recognition. But, if the dog really liked, then no difficulties can get in the way of fulfilling the dream, all the more, four-legged friends are worth it!
What does the “rare breed” of dogs mean? Indeed, for example, the widespread ancient breeds in Japan or China have not been known in other countries for a long time, and appearing here were considered to be a great rarity.
Another nuance is that out of 400 breeds, about 4 dozen have not yet been included in the IFF list, moreover, we are talking about both popular breeds and extremely rare ones. In Russia, the following breeds are considered known: Diver, East European Shepherd, Moscow Watchdog, Russian Hunting Spaniel, but they still have not received the international standard and are considered a curiosity in other states.
It is amazing that at the world level, Russian toy terriers are considered the rarest! But such popular dogs as pit bull terriers, Eskimo spitz, hairless terriers and bulldogs fell into the same category. It is not surprising that such a picture can be observed in any state. But the rarest breeds, whose representatives are extremely few, and the price is quite high, were included in this rating.
This ancient breed, whose representatives lived at Tibetan monasteries, protecting the adjacent territory and their inhabitants. Until recently, they practically did not know anything about them, but even now, when the majority of the breed has heard the name of the breed, it is extremely difficult to meet purebred “Tibetans”.
Representatives of this breed are powerful dogs with excellent guard and guard skills, and their rich coat allows dogs to live even in the most severe conditions. To date, Tibetan mastiffs top the list of the most expensive dogs, and among them the price tag is higher for puppies with a red color.
Another representative of mastiff-like dogs in the homeland called Neapolitan mastino . The dog has a colorful appearance, large size and is considered a rather specific pet.
He does not tolerate an inattentive, neglectful attitude to himself and keeps on a par with households, no less. Most often, mastino does not get along with other pets, it is willful and stubborn. But, despite these qualities, such a pet really becomes not just a companion dog, but a real member of the family, with its own advantages and disadvantages.
An amazing breed of dogs, bred for a specific purpose - its representative was to become a symbol of the German city of the same name. Among the basic requirements for the appearance of the dog was the maximum resemblance to a lion, and as a result of selection such a dog turned out.
Leonberger is a large dog, noble, beautiful, with magnificent fluffy hair. These dogs are used as guards, companions and family pets.
This oldest hunting breed from Ireland has very deep roots, and its representatives are one of the largest dogs in the world dog community. Characterized by high growth, the Irish wolfhound at the same time has a rather elegant appearance. Its special coarse coat requires special care. If we talk about the character, then the "Irish" during the hunt is compared with a lion, and at home - with a meek lamb.
Dogs of this breed were bred in the mountains in the territory of the former Czechoslovakia. They are excellent livestock guards. Having appeared in the 17th century, the Slovak Chuvach, like many other breeds, was one step away from complete extinction.
But thanks to the perseverance of dog handler Antonin Grudo, these unique dogs were restored. Excellent rescuers are made of them, these dogs perfectly carry guard duty.
These dogs are descendants of the ancient Molossians, at the international level they are still considered to be the mestizos of the English mastiff. But the Americans were seriously engaged in their selection in order to obtain obedient, easily trained dogs that can be kept not only in the street, but also at home. As a result of the work, similar dogs turned out, among other things, possessing an athletic physique.
Spanish Alano (Bulldog)
Large dogs with a formidable appearance, possessing incredible courage, power and an attentive look - these are Spanish Alano. Dogs of this breed were bred in order to participate in the traditional national fun of the Spaniards - bullfighting. Unlike other bulldogs, Alano are not descendants of Molossians, but they themselves are their ancestors.
Later dogs of this breed began to be used as watchmen, guards and companions. They are distinguished by excellent obedience, endurance and enormous capacity for work.
South African Boerboel
This bastard comes from Africa, although the roots of the breed go to Asia, to the ancient dog-shaped dogs. In the Assyrian state, these dogs were used as soldiers, they went out on the battlefield in special armor. Later, the boerboels made excellent guards. Modern dogs of this breed adore their family and are happy to give their lives, guarding them.
Like other shepherd dogs, bergamasco has been helping farmers to farm for more than a century. But, when the standard was approved, and these dogs became more and more participants in exhibitions, it became clear - to be shepherds and at the same time to take high titles in various events was incompatible. This is due to the amazing wool of the Bergamo shepherd, curling in the likeness of dreadlocks - from work such a coat deteriorates.
Bergamasco is a dog that can make decisions independently and needs sufficient physical activity.
Hungarian Shepherd Dog (Komondor)
Representatives of the breed do an excellent job with the work of shepherds. Due to their white, rope coat, they mix in the herd with sheep, guarding them and suddenly attacking predators making attempts to profit. Komondors have excellent protective qualities developed at the genetic level, they are smart, hardy and need a respectful attitude.
Owners who want to have such an extraordinary pet should know in advance how to properly care for the original coat of Komondor.
Bearded (Bearded) Collie
This is the rarest species of Scottish shepherd dogs, representatives of which outwardly resemble lapdogs, but of larger dimensions. Like other collies, birdings did a great job with the work of shepherds for a long time.
Today they are turned on as fun and active companions or family pets. The dog has a developed intellect, perfectly assimilates commands and is glad to follow its owner anywhere.
There are three types of this native shepherd breed - Bukovinian, Miorita and Carpathian. All of them appeared solely due to natural selection, without the intervention of breeders.
Representatives of each species have excellent guard and security qualities, they do an excellent job with the shepherd’s work. Despite the excellent working qualities, dogs have not reached wide popularity, so they can be found only in their homeland, and even then not in all areas of Romania.
Karelian bear dog (teddy bear)
Surprisingly, being one of the rarest breeds, a bear dog successfully leads in terms of prevalence among Russian huskies. Having a compact size and a pretty appearance, bear cubs are very brave and courageous. They are taken not only for small and medium game hunting, but also for large animals.
Future owners should know that taking any likes, including Karelian bear ones, is better for work purposes. Otherwise, it will take a lot of time and effort to provide the pet with the necessary physical activity.
This is a relatively new breed of dog that appeared in the States at the beginning of the last century, which most people probably have not heard of. But the Chinooks have a set of excellent qualities that make them excellent service and watch dogs. In addition, these dogs are capable of developing great speed and are capable of transporting huge loads.
Chinook is not a dog for an apartment, he needs space, constant work and the ability to move a lot. If he is provided with these conditions, then the pet will become a companion and defender.
New Guinean Singing Dog
Perhaps, among other breeds, this species can be called the most poorly studied. Experts still argue about the origin of the New Guinean singing dog - some believe that this is only a subspecies of the dingo dog, while others are a completely independent breed. But most scientists agreed that these dogs are not re-run wild animals, but only not completely tamed.
The breed got its name due to its ability to make sounds similar to singing birds or whales. But they are not alien to the traditional dog "dialect" - howling, barking, screeching and growling. Today you can meet such a dog in various zoos in the world.
Representatives of this native breed are excellent hunters for ungulates and different birds. Among these rare Reggebacks, dogs with blue coat and isabella color are especially valued.
It is distinguished from other breeds of these dogs by the presence of a ridge - a strip of hair in the back, growing against the main direction of hair growth. The wider the crest of the dog, the higher the animal is valued, however, it should not grow on the sides.
These dogs are also called African non-barking dogs, Congo Terriers or jungle dogs. Unlike other breeds that can make original sounds, basenji are really not able to bark. In general, dogs by nature are “silent”, and their rumbling can only be heard when the animal is very excited.
From numerous excavations, it was possible to find out that dogs of this breed have existed since the time of the Pharaohs and even then were considered protectors of humans from negative energy and evil spirits.
Czechoslovakian Wolf Dog
The man has repeatedly made attempts to obtain offspring of a dog and its closest relative - the wolf. But, despite the kinship, the results could not please - the dogs were wild and could not be tamed.
But the active breeding work of Czech breeders nevertheless bore fruit - the Czech Wolf was an excellent service dog, equipped with the unique abilities of wild brothers. Naturally, such an animal is suitable exclusively for experienced dog breeders and requires careful socialization.
Northern Inuit Dog
The breed was obtained due to the crossing of the Siberian Husky, German Shepherd and the indigenous Inuit dog. The result was pretty colorful dogs that looked like wolves, but with the habits of a pet.
Representatives of this breed have not received recognition from any large club of dog breeders, but they are included in many organizations related to the breeding of Inuit dogs and forest dogs.
Carolina Dog (American Dingo)
Few people decide to have such an unusual pet, and most often representatives of this species can be found as inhabitants of zoos. It is not known for certain, but it is possible that the Caroline dog was once tamed by a man, but, like the dingo, re-run wild.
This is also confirmed by the fact that individuals caught and kept in captivity do not show aggression towards humans, are rather curious and contact. However, it is worth remembering that the American dingo is still a wild animal, and there are a number of nuances that should be taken into account when taking it to the house.
Moody (Hungarian Cattle Dog)
One of the oldest shepherd dogs, living side by side with a man and engaged in grazing of small livestock. The breed turned out to be quite stable, but, like many others, was on the verge of extinction after the Second World War.
But painstaking work was done to restore it. Breeds such as border collies, Belgian shepherds and cougars took part in the selection. An infusion of fresh blood only improved both the exterior and the working qualities of the mudie.
In fact, today there are much more little-known, rare dog breeds than those listed above. But they all have their own characteristics and individual characteristics, whether it is the original appearance or amazing skills. For example, how many people know about Azawak, Saluki, Catalburun or Chongqing dogs? And it doesn’t matter whether they are internationally recognized or not, this in no way diminishes their merits and does not deprive the title of “man’s best friend”.
